Consulting Services Case Study XYZ S.A., a large steel company in Brazil with 3,000 employees entered into partnership with brainO2 in the first phase of development. One of the key issues faced by the company at the time was how to significantly expand training in information technology, as the skills of their workforce were lagging behind the capabilities of the new information technology that had been installed at significant cost, causing these information technology assets (e.g., PCs, networks, programmable machines) to be underutilized. Even though such training would have a significant and near term return, there were no additional funds available to meet this need. XYZ used the self-serve portal provided by brainO2 to get the specific courses they wanted, many from world-renowned institutions that XYZ would otherwise have no access to, at a cost savings of 75% compared to traditional training. XYZ was able to train 300% more employees with better training material, without causing significant work interruptions (the employees could schedule their training whenever they had time and could stop and restart at any point). The result was higher productivity and utilization of the company’s assets without spending more money on training. In the second phase of brainO2’s development, the XYZ human resource department requested that brainO2 assist them in their annual planning to get expert opinion on how to meet XYZ’s training needs and how to best design and implement curricula to meet those needs. Based on their work together, a tailored curriculum was developed, including many courses that are specific to the steel sector. The combination of in-person, off line self study, on-line learning resulted in doubling the amount of training provided to employees, reducing work interruptions, increasing productivity, and maintaining their tight training budget constraints. After their prior successes, there were so many employees who were deriving benefits from the online courses that XYZ decided that they wanted to internalize the online program more and develop more customized content. In its third phase of development, brainO2, working with one of their technology partners, designed and implemented an internal learning intranet that managed each employee’s customized learning program and that was compatible with XYZ’s existing intranet. Through this learning intranet, XYZ employees could source and schedule training according to their individual program and company budget and content guidelines. Finally, management had a transparent and easy way to measure and track the effectiveness of their training programs and control costs. brainO2 also provided software that XYZ employees used to capture their own internal training courses and offer these courses on their own intranet. In several instances, brainO2 was able to provide tailored courses to meet specific content, language, and cultural needs of the XYZ company. While training was once was a frustrating and often bureaucratic process, it had now become a source of strength, improving XYZ’s ability to compete in the global marketplace. |
